Art portfolio ideas worth stealing

Ideas

Art portfolio ideas worth stealing

Seven things the better sites above have in common. Four hold for any portfolio. Three are specific to showing art.

  • 1

Show fewer pieces than you want to

The strongest portfolios are shorter than their owners find comfortable. Cut until every piece would survive being the only one someone saw.

  • 2

Lead with one strong image, not a menu

The first screen should be work, at size. Navigation can wait one scroll.

  • 3

Put contact one click from everywhere

A person who wants to commission you should never have to hunt. Header, footer, and the end of every gallery.

  • 4

    Own the domain

Your own address is the one asset that survives changing platform, changing gallery and changing career.

  • 5

Group the work by series, not by medium

Someone looking for your paintings does not care that the oils and the acrylics live in separate rooms. Series is how the work was made and how it is read.

  • 6

Lead with the newest body of work and keep the older series reachable

Galleries want to see where the practice is going, not where it started. Archive is fine; archive-first is not.

  • 7

Caption every piece with title, year, medium and size

A collector cannot enquire about a work that has no caption, and an editor cannot credit it.

Art portfolio examples that sell prints, originals and commissions

Some of the sites above stopped being portfolios a while ago. Here is what else they run on the same website, with no commission taken on anything they sell.

  • 1

Selling work with no commission taken

A built-in store puts originals, prints, commissions and digital downloads on the same pages that show the work. Pixpa takes no commission on any sale, so what your payment processor leaves you is what you keep. Stripe and PayPal connect natively.

  • 2

One page, when the practice is one thing

Not every artist needs sections. A single scrolling page with the work, a short statement and a contact form reads faster than a five-item menu and is far easier to keep current.

  • 3

    Writing alongside the work

Studio notes, exhibition write-ups and process posts run on a built-in blog on the same domain, which is also how most artist sites earn their search traffic.

  • 4

Reaching people who do not read English

Art travels further than language. A Pixpa site can serve translated versions of the same pages, which matters when your buyers, galleries and residencies are spread across several countries.

What is an art portfolio?

An art portfolio is a curated selection of an artist's work, presented so that a gallery, buyer, commissioner or admissions panel can assess the practice quickly. It is a selection, not an archive. A physical portfolio holds prints or original pieces in a case. An online art portfolio does the same job on a website, with each piece captioned by title, year, medium and size.

Most working artists include a body of recent work grouped into series, an artist statement or short bio, captions carrying title, year, medium and dimensions, exhibition or commission history where it exists, and a way to make contact. Older work stays reachable but does not lead. Anything that does not represent the current practice is usually left out.

Between 15 and 25 pieces is the range most galleries and commissioners expect from a professional artist. The number matters less than the consistency. A portfolio of 15 works that read as one practice is stronger than 40 that read as a catalogue. Depth per series beats breadth across mediums.

The portfolio is the work itself and the order it is shown in. The artist website is the place that hosts it, along with the bio, the contact page, the shop and anything else that supports the practice. Every artist website contains a portfolio; not every portfolio needs a full website behind it, though most working artists end up wanting one.

Artists commonly use dedicated portfolio platforms such as Pixpa, general website builders such as Squarespace and Wix, and marketplace profiles such as Behance. Among the artists who reviewed Pixpa on Capterra, Squarespace and Wix were the platforms most often named as the previous or alternative choice. The trade-off is usually between commission on sales, control over layout, and price.

Yes. Every example on this page is a live website run by a working artist on Pixpa. Each card names the artist and the template the site was built from, so you can open the template behind any site you like and start from the same place.

Yes. A Pixpa site includes a built-in store, so originals, prints, commissions and digital downloads can be sold from the same pages that show the work. Pixpa charges no commission on sales; you keep the full amount after your payment processor's fee. Stripe and PayPal are supported natively.

No. Every one of the 200+ templates is a finished design that you edit by dragging blocks and replacing images, with no code required. Custom CSS and HTML are available if you want them. Support is staffed by people, not bots, and the 15-day trial needs no card.
